Catalytic converter theft is on the rise. In fact, during the pandemic, the theft of catalytic converters more than quadrupled. But why? Well, it turns out this part of your exhaust system has precious metals making them very valuable
Once a thief is under your car, it can take as little as 30 seconds to make two cuts and be gone without anyone noticing; even dealerships get hit. A dealership in Texas lost 20 catalytic converters in less than 20 minutes. The Thieves then take your stolen catalytic converters to their local junkyards/scrap dealers to sell them. Here is where it gets interesting. Your converter doesn’t have any sort of identification mark that would tie it to your car. No VIN or anything. It would be almost impossible for a junkyard/scrap dealer to tell a stolen cat from one that was pulled from a wreck or an old car, as plenty of people sell them for legitimate reasons. And there’s no system to distinguish between legitimate and stolen until now. When a thief tries to hand in your cat with etching on it, the local dealer can now check to see if it is a stolen cat or not. It’s that simple!
